Afsmelting is a term used in some discussions of metallurgical technology to refer to advanced or adaptive smelting methods intended to improve efficiency and reduce environmental impact. Unlike a single defined process, afsmelting describes a family of approaches that share goals such as high-temperature reduction, flexible feedstock handling, energy recovery, and controlled emission management. In practice, afsmelting can encompass variations that deploy electric furnaces, conventional blast furnaces with modern control systems, or hybrid reactor concepts, all geared toward optimizing the chemical reactions that extract base metals from ore concentrates or recycled materials.

Common features include automated feed systems that adjust throughput to ore quality, enhanced heat recovery through recuperators and gas turbines, and off-gas cleanup to remove pollutants before release or reuse energy within the plant. Slag treatment and oxide removal remain central to achieving metal purity, while closed-loop water and gas systems help minimize environmental discharge.
