Afdamping is the process by which oscillatory motion or dynamic response loses energy over time, causing the amplitude of motion to decrease and the system to settle. It arises from dissipative forces or mechanisms that remove energy from the system, and it is a central concept in mechanics, electronics, structural engineering, and control theory. Afdamping helps prevent excessive vibrations, resonance, and instability.

Common damping mechanisms include viscous damping, where a force proportional to velocity dissipates energy (as in dampers and shock absorbers); Coulomb or dry friction, which provides a constant opposing force; and structural or material damping, due to internal hysteresis and microstructural losses within the material. Damping is often quantified by a damping coefficient or a dimensionless damping ratio, which describes how strongly the system’s energy is dissipated relative to its stored energy.

In mechanical systems, the motion of a damped mass-spring system is described by m x'' + c x' + k x = 0, where m is mass, c is the damping coefficient, and k is stiffness. The natural frequency is ω_n = sqrt(k/m), and the damping ratio is ζ = c/(2 sqrt(km)). Behavior is categorized as underdamped (ζ < 1), critically damped (ζ = 1), or overdamped (ζ > 1). Underdamped systems exhibit oscillations with exponential decay; critically damped systems return to equilibrium without oscillating as quickly as possible; overdamped systems return to equilibrium without oscillation but more slowly.

Applications range from vehicle suspensions and building vibration control to electrical circuits (RLC) and seismic dampers. Designing appropriate afdamping involves balancing rapid settling with acceptable transient overshoot and avoiding excessive energy loss.
