Adventivum refers to a plant part that arises from an unusual or abnormal position. This can include roots that grow from stems or leaves, or buds that develop on roots. In botanical terms, adventitious structures are those that originate from tissues other than the normally developing ones, such as from the epidermis or parenchyma rather than the apical meristem.

Adventitious roots are a common example. These can form from stem nodes, leaf axils, or even directly from leaf tissue in some species. Many plants utilize adventitious roots for vegetative propagation, allowing them to spread and colonize new areas. For instance, the trailing stems of strawberries produce adventitious roots at nodes, forming new plantlets. Similarly, cuttings taken from a plant often develop adventitious roots when placed in a suitable medium.

Adventitious buds can also appear on roots, often leading to the formation of suckers. These are shoots that emerge from the root system of a parent plant. Certain trees and shrubs, like aspens and lilacs, are known for their prolific sucker production. In some cases, adventitious structures can be a sign of stress or damage to the plant, but they are also a crucial mechanism for asexual reproduction and survival in many plant species.
