Adventitiivisia refers to structures or tissues that are not part of the normal or inherent anatomy of an organ or organism. This term is often used in biology, particularly in botany and medicine, to describe growths or formations that arise unexpectedly or in an unusual location.

In botany, adventitious roots are a common example. These are roots that grow from parts of a plant other than the radicle, such as from stems or leaves. Many common houseplants, like ivy and pothos, can readily develop adventitious roots from their stems, allowing them to root easily in water or soil. Similarly, adventitious buds can form on roots or leaves, giving rise to new shoots.

In medicine, adventitious structures can refer to abnormal growths or formations. For instance, adventitious bursae can develop in areas of repeated friction or pressure, acting as abnormal fluid-filled sacs. The term can also be applied to adventitious connective tissue that may form around implanted medical devices or in response to injury, providing an abnormal layer of support or encapsulation. The presence of adventitious structures often indicates a deviation from typical development or a response to environmental stimuli or pathological processes.
