Backings can be films (such as polypropylene, polyester, or vinyl), paper, or cloth. The adhesive is usually pressure-sensitive, forming a bond with light pressure and without the need for solvent or heat. Common adhesives include rubber-based formulations for high tack and lower temperature resistance, acrylic-based adhesives for clarity and aging resistance, and silicone-based adhesives for high-temperature or specialty uses. Some tapes include a release liner to protect the adhesive before use, while double-sided tapes carry adhesive on both sides.

Common types include packaging tape (film backing with a strong adhesive for sealing boxes), masking tape (paper backing with moderate adhesion for paint masking), duct tape (cloth backing with a tough, rubber-based adhesive), electrical tape (insulating PVC backing with a flexible adhesive), and gaffer tape (heavy cloth with a matte finish and high shear strength). Medical tapes and double-sided tapes provide specialized properties for skin compatibility or mounting without visible adhesion.

Selection depends on surface type (smooth or rough), required bond durability, environmental conditions (temperature, humidity), and whether the tape should be removable. In use, surfaces should be clean and dry for optimal adhesion.
