The word derives from Hungarian, with adat meaning data and mező meaning field. The more standard Hungarian term for this concept is adatmező, and adatmez is sometimes encountered as an informal shorthand or in code comments and documentation. While not universally adopted as a formal label, it conveys the same basic idea of a discrete piece of stored information within a structure.
