Acrylonitrile polymers are a group of synthetic polymers made from the monomer acrylonitrile. The most common and commercially significant is polyacrylonitrile (PAN), but acrylonitrile is also a component in copolymers like acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) and styrene-acrylonitrile (SAN). These polymers are characterized by the presence of the nitrile group (-C≡N) in their chemical structure, which imparts unique properties such as good chemical resistance, rigidity, and high tensile strength.

Polyacrylonitrile itself is a rigid and brittle plastic, but it is rarely used in its pure form. Its primary application is as a precursor for carbon fibers, a high-strength, lightweight material used in aerospace, sporting goods, and automotive industries. In this process, PAN is subjected to high temperatures in an inert atmosphere, causing it to cyclize and carbonize, forming a strong, carbon-rich material.

When copolymerized with other monomers, acrylonitrile contributes significantly to the properties of the resulting materials. In ABS, acrylonitrile provides chemical resistance, heat resistance, and rigidity, complementing the toughness of butadiene and the processability of styrene. SAN copolymers offer transparency and good chemical resistance, making them suitable for applications like food containers and appliance parts. The properties of these acrylonitrile-containing polymers can be tailored by adjusting the ratio of the different monomers in the copolymer.
