It refers to the opera-serenata by George Frideric Handel, with a libretto by William Congreve, based on Ovid's Metamorphoses. The story, originating from classical mythology, depicts the tragic love triangle between the nymph Galatea, the shepherd Acis, and the monstrous Cyclops Polyphemus. Acis and Galatea are deeply in love, but their happiness is shattered when the jealous Polyphemus, who also desires Galatea, murders Acis by hurling a boulder at him. In her grief, Galatea transforms Acis's blood into a river, preserving his spirit and ensuring his eternal presence.
