Achromatischer is the comparative form of the German adjective achromatisch, meaning achromatic or color-free. It is used to describe something that is more achromatic than another thing, or to label objects and designs that aim to minimize color artifacts. The base term achromatisch derives from Greek roots meaning “without color” and is common in scientific and technical contexts.

In optics the term achromatisch or achromatischer refers to lenses, optical systems, or components that reduce chromatic aberration—the failure of a lens to focus all wavelengths at the same point. Achromatic designs combine two or more optical elements made from glasses with different dispersion properties so that at least two wavelengths (commonly red and blue) come to a common focus. This correction improves sharpness and color fidelity across a range of wavelengths.

Historically, the concept of chromatic correction emerged in the 18th and 19th centuries with early efforts to improve telescope and microscope lenses. The classic two-element achromatic lens often pairs crown glass with flint glass, balancing refractive properties to achieve partial correction over the visible spectrum. Modern optics also uses more advanced terms such as apochromatic to describe systems that correct chromatic errors over a wider wavelength range.

Outside pure optics, achromatischer can describe filters, detectors, or imaging setups designed to reduce color fringes or unintended color separation, contributing to more neutral or uniform color reproduction.
