Accusative, or the accusative case, is a grammatical category used in many languages to mark the direct object of a transitive verb. In languages with inflected nouns or pronouns, the form of the word changes to indicate its role in the sentence.

Etymology and usage. The term comes from Latin accusativus, which in turn derives from accusare, meaning “to accuse.” Latin grammarians coined the label to describe the case used for direct objects, a convention later adopted in many European languages and other language families. The core function remains the same: identifying the entity that is directly affected by the action.

Typical function and examples. In languages with distinct case endings, the accusative marks the noun or pronoun that receives the action. For example, in German, Ich sehe den Mann (“I see the man”) uses den Mann in the accusative. In Russian, Я читаю книгу (Ya chitayu knigu) uses knigu in the accusative form to indicate the object of reading. In Latin, amō puerum expresses “I love the boy,” with puerum in the accusative singular. Some languages use prepositions or word order instead of inflected forms, while others combine both strategies.

English and pronoun forms. English has largely lost a separate noun form for the accusative, using the same form as the nominative for most nouns. Pronouns retain an accusative (objective) set: I/me, he/him, she/her, they/them, etc., which function as a vestige of a broader case system.
