Accoutrement (plural accoutrements or accoutrements) denotes an item added to an outfit or equipment to support or complete its function. It can refer to clothing accessories, fittings, or equipment associated with a particular activity, occupation, or role. In many contexts, accoutrements are supplementary rather than essential components of a system.

Derived from the French accoutrément, from accoutrer "to dress" or "to equip," the term entered English in the early modern period. Historically, it often described military or ceremonial dress fittings, such as belts, pouches, or plumes, but it has broadened to cover any accompanying items, from kitchen utensils to camping gear.

Examples include a soldier's accoutrements (belt, sword, canteen), camping accoutrements (utensils, lantern, cookware), or culinary accoutrements (gadgets, timers, measuring spoons). In performing arts, stage costumes and props may be described as accoutrements of a character.

Accoutrements are typically distinguished from core equipment or tools by their supporting, nonessential status, though the line can blur in practice. They also differ from accessories that are purely decorative, whereas many accoutrements serve practical or functional roles.
