The abyssopelagic zone, also known as the abyssal zone or simply the abyss, is a layer of the pelagic zone of the ocean that extends from a depth of 4,000 to 6,000 meters (13,123 to 19,685 feet). This region is characterized by extreme conditions, including perpetual darkness, near-freezing temperatures, and immense hydrostatic pressure. Sunlight does not penetrate this deep, making photosynthesis impossible.

Life in the abyssopelagic zone is sparse and adapted to these harsh environments. Organisms that inhabit this zone, such as certain species of fish, squid, and crustaceans, often possess specialized features. These adaptations can include bioluminescence for communication or predation, slow metabolisms to conserve energy, and bodies that can withstand extreme pressure. Many deep-sea creatures are gelatinous or have soft bodies, lacking gas-filled organs that would be crushed by the pressure.

The abyssopelagic zone plays a role in global nutrient cycles, with organic matter from shallower waters slowly descending to the seafloor. Despite the seemingly inhospitable conditions, this zone harbors unique ecosystems and is an area of ongoing scientific research, offering insights into the limits of life and the planet's biodiversity.
