Abrassief is a less common spelling found in some Dutch-language texts for substances and products used to wear away material through abrasion. The standard Dutch terms are abrasief (noun) or abrasieve (adjective). In general, an abrassief refers to abrasive materials designed to cut, grind, polish, or finish surfaces by bringing abrasive grains into contact with the workpiece.

Abrasive materials are categorized as natural or synthetic. Natural abrasives include historical materials such as emery and corundum. Synthetic abrasives include aluminum oxide, silicon carbide, and synthetic diamond. Abrasives are used in forms such as bonded abrasives (grinding wheels, blocks with a binding matrix) and coated abrasives (sandpaper, abrasive belts, discs), as well as loose grains and powders. The choice of abrasive depends on the material being processed, the desired finish, and the processing speed.

Common applications span metalworking, woodworking, automotive repair, stone and ceramic finishing, and electronics manufacturing. The selection of abrasive type and form is guided by the workpiece material, required surface quality, and production efficiency. Performance is influenced by grain size (grit), bond hardness, and the abrasive material itself. Grit numbers indicate coarseness, with lower numbers yielding rougher finishes. Bonds can be resin, vitrified, or metal, and the substrate determines the wheel or belt geometry.

Safety considerations include protecting workers from dust, noise, and vibration; using appropriate personal protective equipment; ensuring adequate ventilation and dust extraction; and following manufacturer guidelines for mounting, speed, and maintenance of abrasive tools.
