Abecedu is a term used in several languages to refer to the alphabet or to a primer designed to teach reading and writing. In its broader sense, abecedu denotes an abecedary, a book or section of a book that presents the letters in order, usually accompanied by simple words, pictures, or phonetic cues to help learners connect shapes with sounds. In some languages the word also serves as the common term for the alphabet itself.

Etymology and usage: the word originates from the Latin abecedarium, traditionally linked to the sequence a, b, c, d at the start of many early primers. This form gave rise to various cognates across Romance and Slavic languages, such as abeceda or abecedário, which in turn have come to denote either the alphabet or a beginner’s reading book in those languages. While English often uses abecedary or alphabet, many languages retain a single term that covers both notions.
