ABEC is a standard used to specify the tolerances and precision of ball bearings. The term originates from the Annular Bearing Engineering Committee, a body under the American Bearing Manufacturers Association (ABMA). The ABEC standard applies to precision bearings and defines allowable variations in dimensions and geometry, including aspects such as bore and outer diameter runout and the concentricity of the rings. It does not, by itself, prescribe lubrication, materials, or overall performance characteristics.

Bearings are graded on a series of ABEC levels: ABEC 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9. Higher numbers indicate tighter tolerances and greater dimensional accuracy, which can enable higher rotational speeds and smoother operation under ideal conditions. However, ABEC does not measure other performance aspects such as lubricant quality, cage design, material hardness, or long-term durability.

In consumer products, ABEC ratings are commonly seen on skateboard and inline skate bearings, among other consumer bearings. While a higher ABEC rating can correlate with tighter manufacturing tolerances, actual performance depends on multiple factors, including lubrication type, seal or shield quality, ball quality, cage construction, and how well the bearing is mounted and maintained. Consequently, ABEC is best understood as a measure of geometric precision rather than a universal predictor of speed or life.

Other bearing standards exist, such as ISO and JIS, and manufacturers may use different testing regimes. ABEC remains a widely recognized reference for precision tolerances, but it is only one factor to consider when selecting bearings.
