Aastaringi is a term of Finnish origin that literally translates to "year ring" or "annual ring." It refers to the growth rings found in trees and other woody perennial plants. These rings are a result of seasonal variations in growth. In temperate climates, for example, trees grow more rapidly during the spring and summer, producing a wider, lighter-colored band of wood. As growth slows in the autumn and winter, a narrower, darker band is formed. The contrast between these two bands creates the visible annual ring.
