aangezicht

Aangezicht is a Dutch noun that refers to the face or countenance of a person, as well as to the outward appearance or aspect of someone or something. In everyday language it is more formal or literary than the common term gezicht, and it is most often found in historical, religious, or poetic contexts. It can also be used more broadly to denote the visible front or presentation of an object.

Etymologically, aangezicht is formed from aan- (on, at) and zicht (sight, view), emphasizing the face as it is seen from the front. The word is related to gezichts- forms such as gezicht and to the Latin-derived term facies used in medical or scientific language. In Dutch biblical and classic literature, het aangezicht des Heren (the countenance of the Lord) is a well-known phrase illustrating the religious usage of the term. In modern prose, the sense of “appearance” or “countenance” remains, but it is generally replaced by gezicht in ordinary speech.

In contemporary usage, aangezicht tends to appear in formal, literary, or historical writing, or in set phrases. For architectural or technical contexts, the related term aanzicht (without the “ge”) is used to describe a front view or elevation of an object, such as a building; this should not be confused with the everyday concept of a face.
