Zytostatikatherapie

Zytostatikatherapie, also known as chemotherapy, is a medical treatment that uses drugs to kill cancer cells or slow their growth. These drugs, called cytotoxic agents, work by interfering with the cell division process, a key characteristic of rapidly multiplying cancer cells. However, since healthy cells that divide rapidly, such as those in the hair follicles, bone marrow, and digestive tract, are also affected, chemotherapy often leads to side effects.

The choice of chemotherapy drugs and the treatment regimen depend on the specific type of cancer, its stage, and the patient's overall health. Treatment can be administered in various ways, including intravenously (through an IV drip), orally (as pills), or sometimes injected. The goal of zytostatikatherapie is to eliminate cancer cells, reduce tumor size, prevent metastasis (spread of cancer), or alleviate symptoms. It can be used as a primary treatment, in combination with surgery or radiation therapy, or as palliative care to improve quality of life. Monitoring for effectiveness and managing side effects are crucial components of this therapy.
