Zvinhu

Zvinhu is a Shona noun meaning “things” or “objects.” It is the plural form of chinhu, and is used to refer to a wide range of referents, including physical items, belongings, or matters in general. The term is common in everyday Zimbabwean speech and appears in both urban and rural contexts as a generic label for things.

Grammatically, zvinhu is a plural noun that can be modified by adjectives, demonstratives, and quantifiers. Examples include: “Ndine zvimwe zvinhu zvandinoda kuita” (I have other things I want to do) and “Zvinhu zvese zvakanaka” (All things are good). In constructions about possession or description, zvinhu often appears with the pronoun or determiner indicating quantity or specificity: “zvinhu izvi” (these things), “zvinhu zvokudya” (food items).

Beyond tangible items, zvinhu can refer to matters, situations, or events in a general sense, similar to the English “things” or “stuff.” It is sometimes used in discourse to introduce topics or describe the state of affairs, as in “zvinhu zvemumba” (household matters) or “zvinhu zvinoda kutarisirwa” (matters that need attention).
