Zurlas

Zurlas are a diminutive, semi-aquatic mammalian species native to the temperate rainforests of the eastern hemisphere of planet Xyra. Their scientific designation, Zurlas aquatilis, reflects their evolutionary reliance on both terrestrial and aquatic habitats. Adult zurlas average 0.8 meters in length and weigh approximately 12 kilograms. They possess a dense, silver-grey coat that provides camouflage among wet foliage and a pair of webbed hind feet adapted for swimming.

Zurlas are primarily herbivorous, feeding on submerged aquatic plants, mosses, and occasionally carrion. Their diet is supplemented by small amphibious insects during the warmer months. Reproduction occurs annually, with a gestation period of roughly 5 months. Mothers give birth to litters of two to four offspring, which are closely cared for by both parents for the first two months of life. Juveniles learn to forage and navigate waterways by observation and imitation.

The social structure of zurlas is loosely communal. Groups typically consist of a single dominant male, several females, and their offspring. Aggression is largely limited to mating disputes and territorial defense against non-tribal individuals. Communication relies on a combination of ultrasonic vocalizations, low-frequency vocal pulses, and a unique foaming mucus secretion that marks territorial boundaries.

Conservation status, as assessed by the Interplanetary Biodiversity Organization, lists zurlas as “Near Threatened”. Habitat loss due to large-scale deforestation of the Xyra rainforests and competition from invasive species are the primary threats. Current efforts focus on habitat preservation and controlled breeding programs in ecological reserves.
