Zrzavar

Zrzavar is a city-state located on the southern coast of the Narthian Archipelago in the fictional continent of Xylar. It functions as a regional hub for trade, scholarship, and governance. The name Zrzavar derives from the Zrzavari word for “stone harbor,” reflecting the city’s rocky coast and enduring role as a port.

Geography and climate: Zrzavar sits at the head of a natural harbor, bounded by basalt cliffs and an inland canal network. The climate is temperate, with dry summers and wet winters. The harbor’s protective breakwater and sheltered basins support a busy maritime economy.

History: What began as a fishing village in the 9th century grew into a mercantile center trading salt, timber, and copper. It gained de facto independence in the 14th century and later formed a loose alliance with neighboring towns. In the modern era, it is a sovereign city-state governed by a joint council.

Government: The government is a bicameral oligarchy comprising the Council of Merchants, which handles foreign and economic policy, and the Assembly of Scholars, which oversees education and culture. The Praetor, chosen by the councils, leads the executive branch for five-year terms.

Economy and demographics: The harbor trades in spices, textiles, metals, and grain. Zrzavar is known for shipbuilding and a local mint that issues the zir. The population is about 210,000, with the Zrzavari language predominant and several merchant dialects coexisting.

Culture and landmarks: Notable sites include the Great Library of Zrzavar, the Obsidian Gate, and the Temple of Winds. The city hosts the Salt Moon festival and the Festival of Looms, reflecting its mercantile and artisanal heritage.
