Zraen

Zraen is a city-state and major port located on the eastern shore of the Nirelia archipelago. It sits at the mouth of the Zraen Strait, a waterway that connects inland lagoons with open sea. The name is believed to derive from an ancient term meaning “harbor of winds.”

Administration and society: Zraen is governed by a semi-democratic council that includes merchant guild leaders, landowners, and elected delegates. The council appoints an archon as head of state for a fixed term. The legal system emphasizes commercial freedom, with regulations designed to protect sailors, dockworkers, and craftsmen.

In the early 18th century, it aligned with the United Provinces after a period of competition with neighboring city-states.

The Market Quarter and the Old Dock are notable commercial and historical zones. The local currency is the zra, minted in copper and silver.

Demographics and culture: The population is multilingual, with Zraeni as the traditional lingua franca and Common Trade used in commerce. The Tide Festival, held annually, celebrates seafaring heritage and local harvests.
