Zouttransport

Zouttransport is the movement of inorganic ions, such as sodium, potassium, calcium and chloride, across cellular membranes, tissues and organs. This process underpins osmoregulation, electroneutrality, nutrient uptake and the generation of membrane potentials that enable nerve signaling and muscle contraction.

Transport occurs through several mechanisms. Active transport uses energy to move ions against electrochemical gradients, most notably the Na+/K+-ATPase pump in animal cells. Secondary active transport uses the gradient of one ion to drive another, as in Na+-dependent cotransporters. Ion channels and exchangers provide rapid, often regulated, ion movement, while some ions can diffuse passively across membranes if supported by carriers.

Zouttransport is essential in both animals and plants. In animals, it supports renal reabsorption and intestinal absorption of electrolytes, as well as the maintenance of blood pressure and volume. In plants, roots take up ions from soil, and long-distance transport moves them to shoots via the xylem and phloem; plants also regulate transporter activity to cope with high soil salinity.

Regulation of zouttransport involves hormonal and developmental cues. In mammals, aldosterone upregulates renal sodium reabsorption; vasopressin modulates water balance affecting ion concentration; other hormones influence transporter expression. In plants, salinity responses recruit signaling networks such as the SOS pathway and accumulation of compatible solutes.

Measurement and study of zouttransport use ion-selective electrodes, radiolabeled tracers, fluorescence-based ion indicators, and electrophysiological methods to quantify fluxes and membrane potentials.
