Zourkhaneh
Zourkhaneh, also spelled zurkhaneh or zoorkhaneh, literally translates to house of strength in Persian. It refers to both the traditional gymnasium where practitioners train and the accompanying system of physical culture known as Varzesh-e Bastani. In a zourkhaneh, the space, rituals, and a guiding master organize a holistic program that combines strength, agility, balance, and martial skills, often performed to music and in a ceremonial atmosphere.
The practice traces to ancient Persia and has remained continuous through medieval and early modern periods.
Today zourkhaneh remain active in Iran and among diaspora communities, preserved as both sport and living cultural
