Zinksulfat

Zinksulfaat, also called zinc sulfate, is an inorganic salt with the chemical formula ZnSO4. It occurs naturally as the mineral goslarite (ZnSO4·7H2O) and is commonly sold and used in its hydrated form, ZnSO4·7H2O, or as an anhydrous salt. The heptahydrate is the most widely encountered form and is highly soluble in water. Anhydrous zinc sulfate is also available and is more hygroscopic.

Production and formulations typically involve reacting zinc-containing materials with sulfuric acid. Common routes include zinc oxide or zinc carbonate reacting with sulfuric acid, or dissolving zinc metal in sulfuric acid, followed by purification and crystallization to obtain the desired hydrate or anhydrous salt.

Primary uses of zinc sulfate are agricultural, industrial, and pharmaceutical. In agriculture, it is a key micronutrient fertilizer and a feed additive to correct zinc deficiency in crops and livestock. In medicine and nutrition, zinc sulfate is used as a dietary supplement and is included in some zinc tablets and formulations to treat or prevent zinc deficiency. In industry, it serves as a source of zinc for chemical synthesis, as a mordant in dyeing and printing, and in processes such as electroplating and paper production. It can also be employed in water treatment as a coagulant to remove impurities.

Safety and handling considerations include irritation to the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract. Ingestion or excessive exposure can be harmful. Appropriate protective equipment, storage in a cool, dry place, and compliance with safety data sheets and local regulations are recommended when handling zinc sulfate.
