Zinkstaub

Zinkstaub, also known as zinc dust or zinc powder, is a finely divided form of metallic zinc. It typically appears as a gray or bluish-gray powder with a high surface area. The production of zinkstaub involves atomizing molten zinc or by other metallurgical processes that result in particles with a small average diameter. The particle size can vary depending on the manufacturing method and desired application, ranging from a few micrometers to tens of micrometers.

Historically, zinkstaub has found widespread use in various industrial applications. One of its primary uses is in the formulation of zinc-rich paints, which provide cathodic protection to steel structures, preventing corrosion. This is due to the electrochemical properties of zinc, which preferentially corrodes over iron, thus protecting the underlying metal. Zinkstaub is also utilized in the chemical industry as a reducing agent in organic synthesis and in pyrotechnics. Furthermore, it has applications in the manufacturing of batteries, as a component in certain rubber vulcanization processes, and in the production of galvanized products.
