Zentangle

Zentangle is a method of drawing that emphasizes structured patterns and a meditative approach to art. It was created by Maria Thomas and Rick Roberts in the early 2000s. The term Zentangle is a registered trademark owned by Zentangle, LLC.

The practice uses small square tiles, typically 3.5 by 3.5 inches, on which artists begin with a light pencil line called a string that divides the tile into sections. Patterns, known as tangles, are then drawn with a black ink pen in a deliberate, repetitive manner, often filling each section. After the ink is laid down, shading with graphite or charcoal adds depth. The process emphasizes process and focus rather than achieving a specific outcome.

Zentangle relies on a defined repertoire of tangles and a standardized workflow, making it accessible to beginners while supporting more complex work. Standard tools include the tile, a fine black pen, a pencil for the string, and shading tools. The method is taught through the Certified Zentangle Teacher (CZT) program, and pattern books and online resources expand the library of tangles.

Zentangle has gained adoption in art education and in mindful art practice, and is marketed as a relaxing, focus-enhancing activity. It is described as an artistic method rather than a medical therapy, and is used in various educational and community settings to promote concentration and creativity.
