Zellschädigender

Zellschädigender is a German adjective formed from the noun Zelle (cell) and the verb schädigen (to damage). It is the present participle form used attributively before a noun, as in zellschädigender Einfluss or zellschädigender Mechanismus. The more common standalone adjective in everyday use is zellschädigend, but zellschädigender appears in scientific writing when the participle must agree with a masculine noun (e.g., ein zellschädigender Faktor).

In biology and medicine, zellschädigend describes something that causes damage to cells. Cell damage can affect membranes, organelles, DNA, or metabolic processes and may be reversible or lead to cell death. Common mechanisms include oxidative stress from reactive oxygen species, DNA lesions, mitochondrial dysfunction, and inflammatory or toxic signaling.
