Zeitvariables

Zeitvariables are variables that encode temporal information in mathematical models and data analysis. The term blends the German root Zeit (time) with the concept of a variable, and it is used in interdisciplinary contexts to emphasize how time enters a system. Zeitvariables can be observed or inferred, and they may enter models as exogenous predictors, state quantities, or derived features that summarize temporal patterns.

Common examples include t or a time stamp; discrete time indices such as k or n; time-of-day, day-of-year, month, and season indicators; as well as lagged values of other variables, rolling means, cumulative sums, and durations (such as time since an event). These elements help capture trends, seasonality, and temporal dependencies in data.

Zeitvariables play a central role in various modelling settings. In regression and machine learning, they form part of the feature set used to forecast outcomes or detect temporal effects. In time-series analysis, they underpin trend and seasonality components. In fields like epidemiology, environmental modelling, and engineering, zeitvariables delineate exposure windows, intervention timings, or process phases, guiding interpretation and prediction.

Methods to handle zeitvariables include time discretization and careful alignment of observation times, as well as constructing features such as splines or Fourier terms for seasonality, lag operators, autoregressive structures, and state-space representations. Care is needed to address timing mismatches, missing data, and nonstationarity, which can affect inference.

Zeitvariables is not a standardized term across all disciplines; when clarity is required, authors may substitute time-related covariates, time indices, or time-varying covariates to describe these concepts.
