Zanzibari

Zanzibari is the demonym for people from Zanzibar, an archipelago off the coast of East Africa that constitutes a semi-autonomous region of Tanzania. The two main islands are Unguja (commonly called Zanzibar) and Pemba, with Zanzibar City as the capital and largest urban center. The region has its own government and is part of the United Republic of Tanzania, retaining a degree of self-rule under the country’s constitutional framework.

Usage and composition: In English, Zanzibari describes both residents and things associated with Zanzibar. In Swahili, the corresponding forms are Mzanzibari (singular) and Wazanzibari (plural). The population is ethnically diverse, reflecting African, Arab, Persian, Indian, and other influences from centuries of trade. The majority of Zanzibaris practice Islam, and Arabic cultural influence remains visible in architecture and daily life, though religious and cultural practices vary.

Language and culture: The main language is Swahili (Kiswahili); English is widely used in administration and higher education. Zanzibar has a rich cultural heritage, including the historic Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Taarab music tradition. The archipelago is also renowned for its spice production, particularly cloves. Tourism, spice cultivation, and fishing are important economic activities for the Zanzibari people.
