Zahnwurzelbildung refers to the developmental process of a tooth's root. This process begins after the crown of the tooth has formed and involves the elongation and shaping of the root structure. The dental papilla, a mesenchymal structure within the developing tooth germ, gives rise to the dentin and pulp of the root. The Hertwig's epithelial root sheath, derived from the inner and outer enamel epithelia, plays a crucial role in guiding the shape and extent of root formation and then degenerates.

The formation of the root is essential for anchoring the tooth within the jawbone and providing support for the enamel and dentin of the crown. As the root elongates, the surrounding alveolar bone forms concurrently, creating the socket into which the tooth will eventually erupt. The rate and pattern of Zahnwurzelbildung can vary depending on the type of tooth, its location in the mouth, and individual genetic factors. Abnormalities in this process can lead to various dental anomalies, such as malformed roots or impactions.
