Zagora

Zagora is a city in southeastern Morocco. It is the capital of Zagora Province in the Drâa-Tafilalet Region. Located in the Draa Valley oasis belt near the edge of the Sahara, Zagora serves as an administrative center and a hub for travelers heading into the desert. The town is connected by road to major cities in the region and is a common stop for visitors en route to desert camps.

Geography and climate: The area is characterized by palm groves and dry, arid landscapes. Irrigation comes from traditional and modern networks supporting date palms and other crops. The climate is hot in summer with cool winters and limited rainfall.

Economy and tourism: The local economy blends agriculture, craft production and commerce. Tourism is a major activity, with desert excursions, camel treks to the Erg Chigaga dunes and stays in desert camps. Visitors also explore the surrounding oases, ksars and traditional souks.

History and culture: The population is largely Amazigh (Berber) with Amazigh languages such as Tashelhit alongside Moroccan Arabic. Zagora has historically been a caravan stop on trans-Saharan routes, contributing to the exchange of goods, ideas and culture.
