ZWJmerkkejä, short for Zero-Width Joiner characters, are special control characters used in digital typography to affect the rendering of adjacent characters. Their primary purpose is to signal that two or more characters should be joined together to form a single glyph or ligature. This is particularly important in scripts where character forms can change based on their position within a word, such as Arabic or Indic scripts.

When a ZWJ character is placed between two characters that have a defined joining behavior, it overrides any default separation and forces them to connect. This allows for correct display of cursive handwriting styles and the formation of ligatures that are essential for legibility and aesthetic presentation in these languages. Without ZWJ, letters might appear disconnected or in incorrect forms, leading to misinterpretation.

The ZWJ character itself is invisible and does not occupy any visual space on the screen or in print.
