Z8002

The Z8002 is a 16-bit microprocessor designed and manufactured by Zilog. It is a subset of the Z8000 family, specifically the segmented version. The Z8002 features a 16-bit architecture with 110 instructions, including a powerful set of string manipulation and bit manipulation commands. It can address up to 64 kilobytes of memory directly.

Unlike its counterpart, the Z8001, the Z8002 does not support memory segmentation. This means it operates with a single, contiguous address space, simplifying memory management for certain applications. This architecture makes it suitable for systems where the total memory requirements are within the 64KB limit.

The Z8002 was designed for embedded systems and microcomputer applications where cost-effectiveness and sufficient processing power were key considerations. Its instruction set and register architecture offered a step up in performance and complexity from earlier 8-bit processors, while remaining more straightforward to implement than the fully segmented Z8001.

While the Z8000 family as a whole saw some adoption, the Z8002 itself was not as widely prevalent as some other microprocessors of its era. However, it represented a significant development in Zilog's processor line, offering a balance of performance and addressing capability for specific market segments.
