Ytkänsliga

Ytkänsliga is a Swedish term that translates to "surface sensitive" or "surface-sensitive." It is primarily used in scientific and technical contexts, particularly in materials science and chemistry, to describe phenomena or properties that are heavily influenced by the outermost layer or surface of a material.

Materials that are ytkänsliga exhibit characteristics that can differ significantly from their bulk properties. This sensitivity arises because the atoms or molecules at the surface are in a different environment compared to those in the interior of the material. They may have fewer neighboring atoms, different bonding arrangements, and a greater exposure to external factors like adsorption, oxidation, or mechanical stress.

Examples of ytkänsliga phenomena include surface catalysis, where reactions occur preferentially on the surface of a material; surface tension, which is a property of the liquid surface; and corrosion, which often initiates at the surface.
