Ytimettömät, often translated as "seedless," refers to fruits that naturally lack seeds or have been selectively bred to be without them. This trait is highly desirable for consumers as it eliminates the inconvenience of removing seeds during consumption. Many common fruits are now available in seedless varieties, significantly enhancing their popularity and marketability.

The development of seedless fruits can occur through several mechanisms. Some, like the common seedless watermelon, are the result of induced polyploidy, where plants are treated with chemicals like colchicine to produce offspring with multiple sets of chromosomes. This often disrupts the normal seed development process. Other seedless varieties arise from naturally occurring mutations, a process known as parthenocarpy, where fruits develop without fertilization. In these cases, the fruit grows and ripens without the stimulus of pollination and subsequent seed formation.

Examples of widely consumed seedless fruits include seedless grapes, which are a staple in many fruit bowls, and seedless oranges and lemons, which are favored for juicing and cooking. Seedless watermelons and bananas are also incredibly popular. The absence of seeds in bananas is a result of human cultivation over centuries, favoring seedless mutants. The ongoing research and breeding efforts continue to expand the range of seedless fruits available to consumers.
