Ythan

The Ythan is a river in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. It rises in the inland hills of the county and flows eastward across farmland and villages, passing through Ellon before entering the North Sea at Newburgh-on-Ythan.

The lower reach of the river forms the Ythan Estuary, a tidal habitat where the river meets the sea. The estuary comprises mudflats, salt marshes and creeks and is notable for its birdlife and other wildlife. It is a focal point for conservation and recreation and is connected with nearby nature reserves and protected coastal landscapes, including the Forvie area.

In addition to its ecological significance, the Ythan has a history of fisheries and local use. The river supports freshwater and migratory fish, and its estuary is used for angling and wildlife watching. The landscape around the river, including bridges such as Ellon Bridge, is an important feature of Aberdeenshire’s built and natural heritage.
