Ympäristöystävällisyys, or environmental friendliness, refers to practices, products, and services designed to minimize negative impacts on the natural environment. It encompasses reducing resource use and emissions, promoting sustainable sourcing, and encouraging responsible waste management throughout a product's life cycle.

Key approaches include eco-design, energy efficiency, and pollution prevention. Lifecycle thinking and life cycle assessments (LCA) compare environmental performance across stages from raw materials to end of life. Environmental labeling and certification schemes provide signals to consumers and buyers about ecological performance.

Common standards in Europe include the EU Ecolabel and Nordic marks such as the Nordic Swan (Joutsenmerkki in Finnish). Sectors that frequently use environmental credentials include consumer goods, construction, transportation, and packaging. Certification often covers sourcing, emissions, recyclability, and durability.

However, environmental friendliness is not without challenges. Greenwashing concerns, data gaps, and trade-offs between different impact areas can complicate assessment. Upfront costs and market readiness can delay adoption. European policy aims, through the Green Deal and Circular Economy Action Plan, to strengthen performance and transparency.
