Ympäristötoimijat, or environmental actors, refers to the diverse range of entities involved in environmental protection, management, and policy-making. These actors can be broadly categorized into several groups. Governmental bodies, at international, national, and local levels, play a crucial role in setting environmental regulations, developing policies, and enforcing laws. Examples include ministries of environment, environmental protection agencies, and municipal environmental departments.

Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are another significant category. These organizations, often driven by advocacy and public awareness, work on issues such as conservation, pollution control, and sustainable development. They can influence public opinion, lobby governments, and implement practical environmental projects.

The private sector, encompassing businesses and industries, also acts as an environmental actor. While historically seen as contributors to environmental problems, many companies are increasingly adopting sustainable practices, investing in green technologies, and engaging in corporate social responsibility initiatives related to the environment.

Finally, individuals and communities are fundamental environmental actors. Their daily choices, consumption patterns, and participation in local environmental initiatives collectively shape the environment. Citizen science projects, community clean-ups, and individual efforts to reduce their ecological footprint are all examples of individual and community-level environmental action. Collaboration and interaction among these various environmental actors are essential for addressing complex environmental challenges effectively.
