Ympäristösopeutuminen, often translated as environmental adaptation, refers to the process by which living organisms adjust to their surroundings to survive and reproduce. This adaptation can occur over short or long timescales and involves a variety of mechanisms.

In the short term, organisms may exhibit phenotypic plasticity, where they can alter their physiological or behavioral responses to environmental changes without any genetic modification. For example, a plant might grow larger leaves in a shaded area to maximize light absorption.

On a longer evolutionary timescale, adaptation occurs through natural selection. Individuals with traits that are better suited to their environment are more likely to survive and pass on those advantageous genes to their offspring. Over generations, this leads to populations becoming more adapted to their specific ecological niches. These adaptations can be structural, such as the thick fur of arctic animals, or functional, like the ability of desert plants to store water. Behavioral adaptations, such as migration patterns or hibernation, also play a crucial role in survival.
