Ympäristöarvio

Ympäristöarvio, often translated as Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), is a systematic process used to predict and evaluate the potential environmental consequences of proposed projects or developments before major decisions are made. The primary goal of an EIA is to ensure that environmental considerations are integrated into the planning and decision-making process, thereby minimizing or mitigating negative impacts and promoting sustainable development.

The EIA process typically involves several stages. It begins with scoping, where the key environmental issues and the extent of the assessment are identified. This is followed by the description of the existing environment, establishing a baseline against which potential changes can be measured. A crucial part of the process is the prediction and evaluation of the likely environmental effects of the proposed project, considering direct, indirect, cumulative, and synergistic impacts. Mitigation measures are then proposed to avoid, reduce, or compensate for adverse effects. Finally, the EIA report is prepared and submitted to relevant authorities for review and decision-making. Public participation is an integral component throughout the EIA process, allowing stakeholders to voice their concerns and contribute to the assessment.
