Yliäänikoneet, also known as supersonic aircraft, are aircraft capable of exceeding the speed of sound. Aircraft that can fly faster than this are classified as supersonic.

The development of supersonic flight was a significant technological achievement. Early research into supersonic aerodynamics was conducted in the mid-20th century. The first aircraft to officially break the sound barrier in level flight was the Bell X-1 in 1947. This achievement opened the door for a new era of aviation.

Supersonic aircraft are characterized by their distinctive swept-back wings and powerful engines, often afterburning turbojets or ramjets. These features are necessary to overcome the increased drag and shock waves that form at supersonic speeds. The sonic boom, a loud explosive noise created when an aircraft breaks the sound barrier, is a notable phenomenon associated with supersonic flight.
