Yliäänikoneissa, commonly referred to as supersonic aircraft, are vehicles capable of traveling faster than the speed of sound, which is approximately 767 miles per hour (1,235 kilometers per hour) at sea level. This speed is designated as Mach 1. Aircraft that exceed Mach 1 are considered supersonic, while those flying at Mach 5 or higher are known as hypersonic.

The development of supersonic flight was a significant milestone in aviation history. The first aircraft to officially break the sound barrier was the Bell X-1 in 1947. Since then, supersonic technology has been applied to military jets, reconnaissance aircraft, and a limited number of passenger planes. The Concorde, a joint British-French project, was the most famous supersonic passenger airliner, operating from 1976 to 2003.

Supersonic flight presents unique aerodynamic challenges. As an aircraft approaches Mach 1, it encounters a phenomenon known as the sound barrier. This is characterized by a rapid increase in drag and other aerodynamic forces, which can be difficult for the aircraft to overcome. At supersonic speeds, the airflow around the aircraft becomes compressible, leading to shock waves that generate sonic booms. These booms are loud, distinctive sounds that occur when an aircraft travels faster than sound, and they are a primary reason why supersonic passenger travel over land is restricted in many areas.

Current research in supersonic and hypersonic flight focuses on improving fuel efficiency, reducing noise pollution, and developing new materials that can withstand the extreme temperatures generated by high-speed flight. Military applications remain a strong driver for supersonic technology, with advancements in stealth, speed, and maneuverability being key objectives. While supersonic commercial passenger flight is currently dormant, there is ongoing interest and development in revitalizing this sector with new designs and technologies aimed at overcoming previous limitations.
