Ylakerroksia

Ylakerroksia is a Finnish term meaning the upper layers of a stratified system. It is used as a descriptive label in geology, soil science, archaeology and environmental studies to refer to the portion of a sequence that lies above deeper horizons or layers. The term does not denote a fixed unit with a defined thickness; its physical meaning depends on context and material.

In soil science, ylakerroksia commonly refer to the uppermost soil horizons, typically including the A horizon rich in organic matter and, where present, the E horizon of eluviation, but excluding deeper B and C horizons. These layers are important for understanding fertility, moisture regime, and vegetation.

In geology and stratigraphy, ylakerroksia denotes the uppermost beds or layers in a sedimentary sequence or rock formation. These layers record recent deposition, weathering, and diagenetic processes and may be affected by erosion, soil formation, or human activity.
