Yksiraitaäänitystä refers to a recording technique where all audio signals are combined into a single audio track or channel. This is in contrast to multi-track recording, where different instruments or vocal parts are recorded on separate tracks, allowing for independent editing and mixing.

In the early days of audio recording, before the advent of multi-track technology, all sounds were captured on a single channel. This meant that once a sound was recorded, it could not be easily isolated or modified without affecting other sounds on the same track. Adjustments to volume, equalization, or effects had to be applied to the entire mix simultaneously.

While modern recording primarily utilizes multi-track methods for flexibility, single-track recording still has its place. It can be employed for simple recordings where precise control over individual elements is not critical, or in situations where a lo-fi aesthetic is desired. Some musicians and producers intentionally use single-track recording to impose creative limitations, fostering a more spontaneous and cohesive performance. The limitations of single-track recording can also lead to a more immediate and raw sound, as there is less opportunity for over-processing. This technique is still sometimes used for live performance recordings or for capturing a quick demo.
