The International System of Units (SI) provides a standardized set of prefixes and unit symbols that are used globally. For example, the symbol 'm' represents the meter, the SI base unit of length, while 'kg' stands for the kilogram, the SI base unit of mass.

When dealing with very large or very small quantities, SI prefixes are attached to unit symbols. For instance, 'k' for kilo denotes a factor of 1000, so 'km' represents a kilometer.
