Ydinaserisuntaan, often translated as "nuclear fission" in English, refers to a nuclear reaction in which the nucleus of an atom splits into smaller parts, often producing free neutrons and photons (in the form of gamma rays). This process typically occurs when a heavy atomic nucleus, such as uranium or plutonium, absorbs a neutron. The absorption causes the nucleus to become unstable and undergo fission.
