Yauzas

Yauzas is a municipality located in the southeastern part of the country of Kestiria, within the province of Aerad. The town occupies an area of 24 square kilometres and is situated at an altitude of 410 metres above sea level. The surrounding landscape consists mainly of rolling hills and agricultural terraces that are irrigated by the Yauzan River, a tributary of the larger Nairis River. The climate is classified as Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters, which supports a variety of crops such as olives, citrus fruits and wheat.

The earliest documented reference to Yauzas dates from the 12th century, when it was mentioned in a charter issued by the local feudal lord. During the Ottoman period the village was incorporated into the sanjak of Sikir, and many of the old stone houses in the center of the town still reflect the architectural style of that era. In the 19th century Yauzas played a minor role in the regional resistance against imperial expansion, a history that is commemorated by a small memorial in the main square.

According to the 2011 national census, Yauzas had a population of 1,845 residents. The town's economy is predominantly agricultural, but in recent years there has been a modest increase in tourism, largely due to the appeal of its traditional crafts, local cuisine and the nearby natural reserves. The municipal council, elected every four years, implements policies aimed at preserving the cultural heritage while promoting sustainable development. Yauzas is connected to the provincial capital by a regional road and a bus line that operates twice daily. The town hosts an annual festival in July, celebrating the olive harvest, which draws visitors from surrounding areas and showcases local music, dance and culinary specialties.
