Yarrows

Yarrows are herbaceous flowering plants belonging to the genus Achillea in the family Asteraceae. These plants are widely distributed across temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, including Europe, Asia, and North America. Yarrows are characterized by their feathery, fern-like leaves and clusters of small, daisy-like flowers, typically white or yellow, though pink and red varieties also exist. The name "Achillea" is believed to derive from Achilles, the legendary Greek hero, who is said to have used yarrow to treat his soldiers' wounds.

These plants are known for their resilience and adaptability, often thriving in dry, well-drained soils and sunny locations. They can be found in meadows, fields, roadsides, and disturbed habitats. Yarrows have a long history of medicinal use, with various species traditionally employed for their astringent, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing properties. Different parts of the plant, such as the leaves and flowers, have been used to make teas, poultices, and tinctures. In some cultures, yarrow has also been associated with divination and protective charms. While some species are cultivated for ornamental purposes in gardens, others are considered wildflowers.
