Yamashiro
Yamashiro Province (山城国, Yamashiro-no-kuni) was an ancient province of Japan located in the Kinai region, corresponding roughly to the southern part of present-day Kyoto Prefecture. The name means "mountain castle" or "mountain province," a reflection of the mountainous terrain that characterizes the area, including the hills surrounding Kyoto.
From the 8th century, Yamashiro contained Heian-kyō (present-day Kyoto), the imperial capital established in 794. As
Administratively, Yamashiro existed as a province until the Meiji era reforms that reorganized Japan’s territorial structure.
